  • Each December, something shifts in Kommetjie. Artists sweep their studios, finish new work, pin up their maps, and get ready to open their doors. For one weekend, Open Studios Kommetjie (OSK) invites the public into working studios across the village.
Over three days, visitors walk from space to space, meeting artists who form part of a focused fine art community. The event includes emerging, established, and underrepresented artists working in painting, sculpture, installation, print, photography, and more. What connects them is a shared commitment to fine art practice and a willingness to meet the public where the work is made.

A short history of OSK:
OSK began seven years ago as a grassroots idea. A small group of Kommetjie artists opened their studios, put out signs, and welcomed the public into their workspaces.[b] It was artist-led then and still is today, shaped by conversation between artists, the place we live in, and the people who come through our doors.
OSK has evolved naturally over time. Each year we grow through conversation and community feedback, finding new pieces to the puzzle. From our printed maps and website to the Give-Back Project and Guest Artist programme, each element helps visitors find their way and connect with the artists and their work.

Inside the OSK community:
Throughout the year, OSK holds space for a connected group of artists. Together, we support one another in developing our practices, sharing experience, direction, and reflection. Some artists are just beginning to exhibit, others are decades into their careers. What binds us is not just geography, but the shared value we place on art-making, and the conversations it opens between us.

We would love you to join us this year from 5-7 December 10:00 - 17:00 daily
In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more about @openstudioskommetjie , new artists joining, the judging panel etc. so watch this space!

  • MEET OUR ARTISTS - @odettehowellphoto

A little mash up of Odette’s studio last year @openstudioskommetjie

In her own words:
“I’m currently away in Europe, soaking in new landscapes, stories, and quiet moments of soul searching. This time has been deeply inspiring, and while I’m not yet sure what body of work I’ll present for Open Studios this year, I’m allowing space for possibility. It may be something entirely new born from this journey, an extension of ongoing work, or a return to earlier pieces with fresh eyes.

My practice is intuitive, grounded in emotion and reflection, and what I choose to exhibit will reflect where I find myself upon returning home. Whether new or familiar, the work will speak to inner shifts, observation, and connection.”

  • MEET OUR ARTISTS!!

In the lead up to Open Studios Kommetjie 2025, with our sponsor @tracey_seeff, we will be showcasing the talented creators who make this event so special.

-Michelle Beattie (MISHVANIA)-
@mishvania_art

Michelle creates intuitive sculptures from ocean plastic.

In 2024, she held her first solo exhibition and currently has work exhibited in London and in galleries across Cape Town. She is also currently presenting a new body of work in a solo exhibition at @ink.box.art gallery in Kalk Bay until the 16 June.

Her art highlights the devastating impact of ocean plastic pollution, inviting viewers into meaningful conversations about how we can collectively address this crisis.
“If I don’t show you, you will not see!”

Mark your calendars for @openstudioskommetjie 5-7 December
10:00 - 17:00 daily

We can’t wait to welcome you to our homes and studios

  • Repost from @katrien021 our resident documenter and photographer

There’s a first for everything, even for ‘First Thursdays’ at @imhofffarm .

@janetormond_art , I don’t know if you realize what you have unleashed but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many people at Imhoff Farm and all having a ball. There was something for everyone, beautiful exhibitions by some of our local artists, food, drinks, music, fires to keep you warm, all shops and restaurants open, leather keychain making workshops facilitated by the wonderful and patient @hopetownov interns and even an outdoor movie for the kids.

I’m looking forward to the next one.

  • Repost from @kristenmcclarty_art

Trimming and labelling “Notes on the Yellow Rock Fort” - a small woodcut study of a space I’m focussed on at the moment. An ongoing familiarization to allow a pulling together of a tableau of senses associated with this place.

Just on time for my submission to @woolwichcontemporaryprintfair along with a few other pieces from this series.

Those who meet the criteria are then passed on to the external panel, who consider how each submission reflects the artist’s intent, how it connects to fine art practice, and what it might bring into the event.

This process helps us create an event that holds a range of voices and approaches. It keeps OSK connected to a wider world of dialogue and practice

Keep your eyes peeled for an introduction to our esteemed selection panel for 2025.

Have a lovely day and remember to check the date for OSK 25: 5-7 December

More about Open Studios Kommetjie

*What is an Open Studio?
The event itself is where the artists’ work meets the public. For one weekend, artist studios open. Visitors step into the places where ideas take shape, where work is formed, questioned, and developed.

This exchange is the heart of OSK: a moment of connection between artist and audience, shaped by openness and curiosity.

*Who Can Apply to OSK?
OSK is rooted in Kommetjie. Artists who apply either live here or keep a working studio in the village. The event brings together those who are actively building a fine art practice.

We look for original pieces and limited editions, made with clear authorship and intent. This means we don’t centre mass-produced or decorative work, but practices that are artist-led, conceptually grounded, and part of a wider fine art conversation.

To take part, artists also need to be active in the field, exhibiting in galleries, curated shows, public art projects, or similar contexts. These criteria help OSK stay focused, while holding space for a broad range of voices and approaches.

Each December, something shifts in Kommetjie. A short history of OSK: OSK began seven years ago as a grassroots idea. Inside the OSK community: Throughout the year, OSK holds space for a connected group of artists. Together, we support one another in developing our practices, sharing experience, direction, and reflection. Some artists are just beginning to exhibit, others are decades into their careers. What binds us is not just geography, but the shared value we place on art-making, and the conversations it opens between us. We would love you to join us this year from 5-7 December 10:00 – 17:00 daily In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more about @openstudioskommetjie , new artists joining, the judging panel etc. so watch this space! MEET OUR ARTISTS – @odettehowellphoto A little mash up of Odette’s studio last year @openstudioskommetjie In her own words: “I’m currently away in Europe, soaking in new landscapes, stories, and quiet moments of soul searching. Whether new or familiar, the work will speak to inner shifts, observation, and connection.” #artliveshere #openstudioskommetjie #arteventcapetown #seeffsupportsthearts #fineartphotography

Repost from @katrien021 our resident documenter and photographer

There’s a first for everything, even for ‘First Thursdays’ at @imhofffarm .

@janetormond_art , I don’t know if you realize what you have unleashed but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many people at Imhoff Farm and all having a ball. There was something for everyone, beautiful exhibitions by some of our local artists, food, drinks, music, fires to keep you warm, all shops and restaurants open, leather keychain making workshops facilitated by the wonderful and patient @hopetownov interns and even an outdoor movie for the kids.

I’m looking forward to the next one.

@ink.box.art & Michelle Beattie invite you to LITTORAL: Echoes from the Shore – a powerful solo exhibition by Kommetjie artist @mishvania_art

🗓 5–16 June 2025
📍 INK BOX ART Gallery, Memory Lane, 70 Main Rd, Kalk Bay

LITTORAL (adj.): relating to or situated on the shore of the sea or a lake.
It’s the perfect word to capture Michelle’s work — transforming ocean debris into striking compositions that explore the delicate space between nature and human impact.

🎉 Opening: ‘First Thursday’ 5 June – 9:00 - 21:00
Meet Michelle and reflect on the stories the sea returns to us.

🚶‍♀️ Artist Walks:
Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 June | 11:00–15:00

🌍 The exhibition coincides with World Ocean’s Day (8 June), Father’s Day (15 June), and Youth Day (16 June) — a meaningful moment to engage with ocean health and creative action. Come be part of this unique coastal experience.

Repost from @kristenmcclarty_art Trimming and labelling “Notes on the Yellow Rock Fort” – a small woodcut study of a space I’m focussed on at the moment. An ongoing familiarization to allow a pulling together of a tableau of senses associated with this place. Just on time for my submission to @woolwichcontemporaryprintfair along with a few other pieces from this series. #kristenmcclartyart #kristenmcclarty #landscape #landscapelanguage #language #coastalart #printmaker #southafricanartist
