About Open Studios Kommetjie

Each December, Open Studios Kommetjie invites the public into artists’ studios across the village.

Open Studios Kommetjie is an annual artist-led event with a fine art focus, hosted in the coastal village of Kommetjie, South Africa. Over the span of a weekend, participating artists open their doors to share both new work and works in progress, along with the spaces in which their creative practices take place.

These artists include emerging, mid-career, and established practitioners working in the fields of painting, sculpture, print, photography, public art, sound art, and more. What connects them is a shared commitment to art-making and an openness to public dialogue.

Visitors can explore at their own pace, meeting the artists, asking questions, and engaging directly with the ideas and processes behind the work.

The event started in 2019 as a grassroots initiative. It remains shaped by artists in conversation with one another, with the broader Kommetjie community, and with the visitors who return each year to explore, connect, and invest in the work. The event continues to grow through shared learning, mutual support, and a collective commitment to fine art practice.
