About Open Studios Kommetjie
Each December, Open Studios Kommetjie invites the public into artists’ studios across the village.
Open Studios Kommetjie is an annual artist-led event with a fine art focus, hosted in the coastal village of Kommetjie, South Africa. Over the span of a weekend, participating artists open their doors to share both new work and works in progress, along with the spaces in which their creative practices take place.
These artists include emerging, mid-career, and established practitioners working in the fields of painting, sculpture, print, photography, public art, sound art, and more. What connects them is a shared commitment to art-making and an openness to public dialogue.
Visitors can explore at their own pace, meeting the artists, asking questions, and engaging directly with the ideas and processes behind the work.
The event started in 2019 as a grassroots initiative. It remains shaped by artists in conversation with one another, with the broader Kommetjie community, and with the visitors who return each year to explore, connect, and invest in the work. The event continues to grow through shared learning, mutual support, and a collective commitment to fine art practice.

Meet the artists
Each year, Open Studios Kommetjie features a curated group of 20 to 30 artists working across a range of fine art disciplines. The annual lineup includes both new voices and returning artists, making each year a unique reflection of the community and its practices. Visit our Artists page to explore the participants’ individual profiles, work, and studio locations.

Planning your visit
Open Studios Kommetjie takes place during the first weekend of December, from Friday through to Sunday, between 10:00 and 17:00 daily.
Visitors can plan their route using our live map, available online during the event. Printed copies are also available at each studio and at the main hub. The event is signposted throughout the village, making it easy to find and move between the different studios.
For practical information about transport, accessibility, and how the event works, see our FAQ page.
Apart from the various studios, our map also includes a few local highlights such as public artworks located throughout the village, as well as some of Kommetjie’s well-loved cafés and coffee spots. The event is a chance to slow down and spend time with both the artists and the place itself.
