Our Give Back Project

The Give Back Project was established in 2019 as a way for Open Studios Kommetjie artists to connect with the communities around us beyond the limits of the annual event.

Each year, funds raised by participating artists are used to support a local charitable organisation and an artist-led public art project.

Off the Wall

In 2026, we introduced Off the Wall, a three-day mid-winter fundraising event presented by the Open Studios Kommetjie Collective.

While the annual Open Studios Kommetjie event in December opens individual artists’ studios to the public, Off the Wall brings the work of past and present participants together under one roof for a joint exhibition.

Past Artist Collective

The first Off the Wall event, featuring the work of more than 30 artists, was hosted in the home and studio of artist Gill Allderman in June 2026.

A percentage of the artwork sales supports our Give Back Project, with funds going to the NPO HopeTown in Ocean View and to a new public mural by Open Studios Kommetjie artist Jéan America at The Village Place in Kommetjie.

HopeTown is an NPO in Ocean View that is creating opportunities for young people through education, skills training, and mentoring.

Given the significant levels of youth unemployment in the area, HopeTown has developed programmes that support participants as they build the necessary practical skills, experience, and confidence to take the next steps towards their future.

“We want to see them grow in social skills, work ethics, character, teamwork, and self-confidence, and help them become job-ready,” says HopeTown co-founder and CEO Doris Lindsay.
Regarding the support from the Open Studios Kommetjie community, Doris says:

“We are especially touched that a community of artists has chosen to stand alongside our community in this way. There is something very beautiful about creativity being used not only to create beautiful things, but also to create hope, opportunity, and lasting change for others.”

Public Art Initiative

Each year, a part of the proceeds from our Give Back Project support a public art project in Kommetjie. The purpose is to create opportunities and greater visibility for local artists, while beautifying public spaces around the village.

Current and past public art projects that resulted from the Give Back Project are indicated on the Open Studios Kommetjie event map so that visitors can view them as they move between studios.
