Meet the Artist

Michele Koch

Michele Koch leads two lives, one as the owner of a busy B&B, and one as a ceramic artist. From the first, she gains regular interaction with international guests who enrich her life here in the small village of Kommetjie. The second provides her with a retreat into her happy place — a simple, peaceful studio overlooking a beautiful garden and conserved wetlands.  She has been fortunate enough to pursue ceramics as a career for over 40 years, having taught at local schools and in her home studio.

Each of Michele’s ceramic items promises to be unique. She makes platters, plates, and decorative pieces imprinted with the unique patterns of antique handmade lace, hessian, horsehair, herbs, flowers, and plants. Fine sea grass collected from nearby Longbeach is one of her favourite natural materials to work with.

In her Kommetjie studio, you will find all kinds of tableware, utensils, and accessories characterised by the rustic, imperfect, and spontaneous style she applies to all her thrown, handbuilt, and moulded pieces.
