Meet the Artist
Chip Snaddon is a South African artist who has worked as a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ in the image-making field, starting as a photographer, then as a newspaper editorial cartoonist, storyboard artist in the film industry, graphic designer, comic artist and illustrator. Since 2012 he has had the opportunity to make commissioned land- and seascape paintings as well as large-scale public art including murals and found-object sculptures and installations. The latter have mostly been temporarily installed and activated at AfrikaBurn’s annual art and music gathering in the Tankwa Karoo. He has recently been fortunate to create public art in Kommetjie, which has elicited a positive response from the community. He is currently engaged on a traditional cast bronze sculpture commission. As a novice in the medium, the learning curve has been steep but rewarding.
Born in Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal in 1964, Chip matriculated from Hilton College in 1982. He went on to study fine art at UCT, earning a BAFA with a major in photography in 1986, followed by an HDE (higher diploma in education). He worked as a photographer for Cape Nature Conservation until 1992 and then went abroad to London to work as a freelance artist and illustrator. Returning to Cape Town in 1995, he has worked here ever since as a freelance artist, designer and public art practitioner. He lives and works in Kommetjie.
