Leah Johnson is a fibre artist and practising architect – two fortuitously aligned vocations. Working with fibre, she weaves and layers to build textured compositions of bold form and dynamic perspective. Their sensibility offers a nod to the early modernists she so admires: Barragán, Corb, Niemeyer, Doshi, Khan, and Correa.

Her architectural philosophy is driven by a deceptively simple ambition to craft moments of joy within the built space. She wants the occupant of this space to feel simultaneously elevated and held. It is this quality – elusive yet deeply human – that she looks for in her fibre art too.

Leah uses abstraction to distill form to its essence, thereby creating artworks that serve as a threshold, inviting the viewer to step forward and find their own reality within. In these works, spatial relations are both flattened and expanded to create an intriguing paradox, that of complex simplicity.
