Lisa’s artistic journey has taken many turns throughout her life, but clay – a medium that has captivated her since her first pottery lesson at age seven – has always remained at the forefront. Today, from her studio in Kommetjie, between mountain and sea, she traces the quiet persistence of the natural world amid the creeping advance of development.

Over the years, Lisa has developed a distinct and deeply personal visual language that connects craft, place, and environment. Each of her hand-built vessels is shaped through coiling and pinching before being painted with slips, underglazes, and oxides. She uses a sgraffito technique to draw and scrape into the slip. Bold and unexpected colour combinations add vitality and interest to each vessel. Surface design and pattern are integral to the forms.

Her ceramic works, intricately adorned with finely drawn depictions of birds, baboons, fynbos and indigenous flora, have been said to “transcend decoration”, serving as “vessels of memory, mourning, and ecological reverence”.
