Meet the Artist

Astrid Blumer is an artist and illustrator living in Kommetjie, Cape Town. She attended a school that specialises in the arts and it was here that she had her first experiences with various types of mediums such as drawing, painting, print-making, design & ceramics. She worked as an illustrator & designer at a Children’s Book Illustration Studio for 8 years, after which she launched into the path of being a creative freelancer, and later the creation of her art studio.
In her art, Astrid explores the intricate dance between humanity and nature using acrylic inks and paints, pastels and various mediums. Through loose, textural brushstrokes combined with finer, detailed mark-making and line work, she expresses a sense of connection and movement. While she doesn’t strive to replicate precise botanical forms, she does want her creations to look like they could have grown somewhere. Feminine energy is a central theme too, depicted through flowing flower forms, combined with symbolism and recurring motifs such as the sun and moon, vessels (symbolising the womb), and the female form itself, serving as potent metaphors for transformation, growth, and renewal.
