Meet the Artist

Ichi-go ichi-e translates to ‘each moment only once’, a Japanese concept that speaks to the unrepeatable nature of experience. In his ceramic practice, Wim Botha aims to create items that bring the user into the unique present moment by engaging the senses through form, colour, texture, and the immediate experience of holding something unique and unfamiliar.
Wim explores the textures and colours of the natural world, from foliage, lichen, and moss to minerals, rock, and sandstone. His teabowls serve as a gateway to contemplation of and integration into the larger environment.
These vessels are reduction-fired with experimental techniques and glazes to invite the unexpected and create unique interactions – something raw and visceral – all while delivering the highest quality and durability.
Wim’s ceramics are supplemented by various wooden items made from studio offcuts – from heirloom-quality cutting boards to handmade chopsticks and imported Japanese temple incense and handmade speciality knives.
