Meet the Artist

Jenna Burchell is a project-based artist dedicated to preserving memory from the periphery through the fusion of digital and natural elements. Her Songsmith project repairs and transforms objects with golden sound instruments, creating interactive sound sculptures that capture the stories of people, places, and events. Burchell’s work highlights the significance of repair and the narrative of fractures, acknowledging the beauty in these imperfections as a reflection of human experience. She exhibits locally and internationally at galleries and museums, with notable projects including installations at Spier Wine Farm and Tygerberg Medical Campus. Visitors to Open Studio Kommetjie can explore Songsmith rocks in process, including those for the upcoming Songsmith Sān project at the Sarah Baartman Memorial in the Eastern Cape. Works in progress of the Heartbreak Pots series, opening at the Dakar Biennale, will be available to view and experience. Additionally, maquettes, cards, and printed items will be available for purchase.
