Confucius said, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Katrien Heere echoes this sentiment in her belief that, if we are to see the beauty that surrounds us, we must learn to look, and be open to changing our perceptions of what beauty is. Beauty lies not only in perfection, she argues.

In her mind, our worldview is defined by our relationship with the natural world. Having placed ourselves above it, we have lost our connection to it. By sharing her photographs, she hopes to evoke a new way of seeing that elicits awe, wonder, and curiosity – a way of seeing that notices the unusual in the everyday, the unexpected in the expected. In doing so, she wants to remind humans that we are an integral part of nature, and that the onus lies on us to reconnect with and protect it.
